In Ukraine, gooseberries remain a niche culture and serve to expand the range. At the same time, there is a clear distribution: varieties with colored berries enter the fresh produce market, and varieties with green berries are processed, said Alexander Yarechenko, deputy director for scientific work at the NAAS Gardening Institute.
Gooseberries in Ukraine never became a commercial culture and have a limited sales market. The total area allocated for the cultivation of this berry in Ukraine is 500 ha. Of these, gooseberries for commercial production are cultivated on 150 hectares.
In Europe, gooseberries also did not become popular, and beyond its borders it is even less known, summed up Alexander Yarechenko. For information, gooseberries are one of the earliest honey plants, which is especially appreciated by beekeepers. Its fruits are rich in natural acids, pectins, vitamins and easily digestible sugars. Currently, 1,500 varieties of gooseberries are known.
This shrub is cultivated in all countries with a temperate climate. In some countries, it can be found as a wild plant. As a cultivated plant, gooseberries are not very convenient due to the frequent defeat of diseases and insect pests.
