Farmers across the country on June 9 “opened their gates” for Open Farm Sunday, the largest public demonstration of British agriculture.
The events demonstrated to the public everything that British farmers produce and supply.
The initiative is unique in bringing together food and agriculture sectors to celebrate partners, from farmers and processors to retailers and related organizations.
The theme of this year's “Open Farm Sunday” is to get closer to agriculture. The focus was on the people involved — farm families, technical teams throughout the UK involved in food production, rural management and natural resources.
Last year, the event was attended by over 270,000 people, indicating its significant impact on the relationship of the population with the food sector and agriculture. Data for yesterday's event has not yet been reported.
It is noteworthy that the conservative Department of Agriculture called Open Farm Sunday "a fantastic initiative." And the minister himself said that “It connects us all with the countryside and helps us understand agriculture and food production.”
Open Farm Sunday is run by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), an organization that educates the public on sustainable agriculture.
