In the Department of Agroindustrial of Kherson region, under the chairmanship of the director Alexander Palivoda, a meeting of the working group involved in developing a strategy for the revival of sheep husbandry in the region was held. This was reported by the press service of the DAPR of the Kherson Regional State Administration.
In Soviet times, sheep husbandry was developed in the region, but since then the number of animals has decreased tenfold.
The main reasons that hinder the development of sheep breeding now:
- lack of sufficient free pasture and areas for growing feed;
- low sales price of lamb and low demand for sheep products in the domestic market;
- low purchase price for wool;
- the high cost of producing veterinary documents for moving animals.
The positive development factors include the powerful scientific base presented by the Institute of Animal Husbandry of the Steppe Areas “Askania Nova” and Kherson State Agrarian University, own breeding developments of Kherson scientists, and the presence of enterprises that traditionally are engaged in sheep farming in the region.
Today in the region such directions of sheep breeding can develop:
- meat;
- Woolen
- breeding sheep.
Alexander Palivoda instructed the members of the working group to analyze the prospects in each of the areas, and to study the export potential, the profitability of the development of wool production and the possibility of creating cooperatives for the consolidation of commodity lots.
