The developers of the Agricultural Research Institute in Siberia have developed a new variety of forage grass. A breakthrough in the world of selection occurred in the Narym department of the institute, and the creators of the innovative variety received a patent for their invention.

This is a common beckmania plant. Scientists worked on improving this culture for many years and, in the end, showed the world a variety with the romantic name “Little Mermaid”.

Research and experiments were carried out on the basis of the Narym branch of the Siberian Scientific Research Institute of Agricultural Equipment in the city of Kolpashevo. Drummers of breeding labor - Lyubov Urazova and Olga Litvinchuk admit: thirty years have passed since the first work on this variety began and until the creation of the Little Mermaid.

“It all started in the mid-80s,” says Urazova. - And the first work with beckmania was carried out by our colleague, Boris Sosnik, a breeder from the Narym department of the institute. To our days, he, unfortunately, did not survive. But we continued his work. The technology of complex hybrid populations was used. The basis was taken wild beckmania. And finally, they came to the conclusion that the long-suffering “Little Mermaid” today is a plant that is hardy and resistant to flooding in the meadows, which can feel comfortable even if it has been in flood waters for more than a hundred days. ”

The predecessor of the Little Mermaid was a kind of beckmania called Narymskaya-2. This variety was distinguished by high sowing efficiency and productivity. Hay productivity due to elongated blades of grass increased by almost 15 percent. The Little Mermaid was also endowed with similar properties and is recommended for sowing on reclamation sites with increased moisture.
