More than three years ago, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first recognized a genetically modified animal as safe food.
Now, the Office has given permission to the biotechnological company AquaBounty Technologies to grow and sell its GMO salmon in the United States. According to the representatives of the biotechnology company's trading group, their fish grows twice as fast and at the same time, consumes a quarter less feed, and this will contribute to a more sustainable supply of food to the population.
The ban on the import of GM fish by the US Food and Drug Administration was lifted on Friday. The company’s management said that the lifting of the import ban would allow the United States to begin production and marketing of AquAdvantage salmon, which in turn would reduce the country's dependence on imports of seafood. It will also open the way for future innovations that contribute to the sustainable satisfaction of growing global demand and, in addition, reduce the harmful effects on the environment.
At the same time, a number of Alaskan senators are extremely categorically opposed to GM salmon. According to one of them, Senator Liza Murkowski, she is seriously concerned about getting a new marketable fish by splicing DNA. The senator said the American consumer deserves it. to know what they gain and eat.
