Agrarians of Ukraine came to the conclusion that on the territory of the country it is possible to grow such an exotic plant as Opuntia with high hopes for a generous and high-quality crop.

We are talking about a cactus pear, which grows mainly in North and South America, as well as in Mexico with its hot and humid climate. However, recently researchers have concluded that Opuntia tolerates the influence of low air temperatures.

It will not be superfluous to note that Opuntia is now grown mainly for the preparation of feed for farm animals. In addition, it is often used as a hedge protecting from uninvited guests.

Cactus Pear Opuntia

It is known that Spanish housewives actively pickle cactus pears and turn them, thus, into an incredibly delicious delicacy. And on the island of Malta, the fruits of prickly pear are processed into a stunning liquor, which is considered a local treasure.

In Ukraine, Opuntia in the wild grows in the Odessa region. It is found in the Kherson open spaces. Complicating its “taming" is the fact that in the southern regions of Ukraine drought in the summertime and sharp changes in air temperature in winter often prevail.

Nevertheless, it has been proven that Opuntia is ready to resume its growth and vegetation even after a prolonged absence of moisture or wilting of the trunk and stems. This gives hope that soon a new - unusually and very useful - agricultural plant will appear in the vastness of Ukraine.
