Adidas has moved forward in the ranking and has become the world leader in the supply of green cotton. Ikea and H&M Group took second and third places respectively.
Progress in the sustainable use of cotton has been demonstrated by companies such as Bestseller (Jack & Jones, Vera Moda, Only) and Decathlon, which in 2017 were rated “travel beginners” but now “leading” due to their sharp increase in sustainable cotton consumption.
Others in the top 10 were C&A (4), Otto Group (5), Marks and Spencer Group (6), Levi Strauss & Co. (7), Tchibo GmbH (8), Nike (9) and Decathlon Group (10).
In ancient China, cotton was valued much higher than silk, since it was extremely rare, and silk, on the contrary, was in abundance.
Cotton Rating 2020 is published by three non-governmental organizations - the Pesticide Control Network (UK), Solidaridad and WWF, based on studies conducted and compiled by Aidenvironment, an independent consultancy. 77 cotton-consuming companies using an estimated more than 10,000 tons of cotton per year are evaluated according to the following criteria: government policy and obligations, the amount of cotton actually used from sustainable sources and how open they are to their supply chain.
