African swine fever (ASF) in Vietnam was discovered in February this year. During this time, the disease spread to all provinces of the country.
The disease triggered a sharp increase in domestic pork prices. To avoid a catastrophic shortage of this meat and to resolve the situation on the domestic market, the Vietnamese authorities urge pig farms to increase production volumes.
In February-September of the current year, about 5 million pigs were killed in the country due to the virus, which makes up 18% of the total national population. Pork prices during this period increased by 70%. Currently, a kilogram of pork in live weight in the country costs about $ 2.6.
Vietnamese Agriculture Minister Nguyen Zuan Quong said the pace of African swine fever has slowed.
Given this, the ministry calls on large farms with a high level of biosafety to increase production volumes.
It is worth noting that the partial replacement of pork meat with other types of animal protein has already begun on the Vietnamese market.
So, since the beginning of this year, poultry meat production in the country has grown by 13.5%, beef - by 4.2%, and fish and seafood - by 6.1%.
